tEXt Trailer online

After a really hectic week of preparing, we shot the footage for my new short film, tEXt.
Today I finished capturing the footage and pieced together a short trailer, during which (naturally?) my computer started making disturbing noises.

tEXt (Trailer, Rough Draft) from Robert Thomson on Vimeo.
I’ll be keeping up to date with regular posts about how [...]

“tEXt” Blog

It’s 6:57 a.m. The coffee’s on. My back has been iced. Oscar has been walked. I’m settling in quite nicely to the unexpected calm and quiet of life downtown between six and seven in the morning. It reminds me of Puerto Vallarta without the sound of the beach or the demand a vacation confronts you [...]

The hidden universe of Rodrigo Garcia’s “Mother and Child”

I have often felt like an outsider no matter where I go, but watching Garcia's characters--especially Annette Benning's Karen--was like being surrounded by familiar people for the first time in my life.

A summer chock full of film

I purchased a membership at Cinematheque Ontario this afternoon, and along with it tickets to see nine films during the first half of the summer. I’m especially looking forward to seeing “A Star Is Born” on a large screen, although I have no idea how large Jackman Hall’s screen is. I will find out in [...]

Hitchcock’s “I Confess” and the tyranny of altruism

I’m not sure whether “I Confess” is one of Alfred Hitchcock’s better films, but I certainly find it’s philosophy troubling.
A priest (Montgomery Clift) is accused of murder when he refuses to reveal the killer’s true identity. Why? The murderer told him he committed the crime in confession, and the priest’s vow of confidentiality is what [...]

Carole Lombard and my uncertain principle

Yesterday I watched Alfred Hitchcock’s “Mr. & Mrs. Smith.” It’s hard to believe I’ve never seen Carole Lombard in a film before this, but she was a revelation.
For me, the film has a difficult time holding itself together because Lombard’s character is a total nut case. She vacillates between clear-eyed rationalizations and obstinate stupidity, unfortunately [...]

The Wrong Man

Just finished watching Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Wrong Man” with Henry Fonda and Vera Miles. What a curious departure from his other films. I actually enjoyed the bleak tone of it, and the level of restraint that infiltrates virtually every element of the film from the dialogue to camera movements to all of the performances right [...]

Work begins on my new short film

It’s official. I’ve begun a new short film project.
After working on visual ideas for a week, I finally got down to beginning the script.
The tentative title is “Three Of Me” or possibly “Me Of Me,” but at this stage it’s hard to tell how it may change.
One of the two locations is set, and I [...]

Fantastic “Foreign Correspondent”

Last night I watched Alfred Hitchcock’s “Foreign Correspondent,” and enjoyed it immensely.
The performances were great and the pace and tension were nicely built. What really impressed me was the scope and intensity of the plane crash sequence and subsequent scenes of the plane wreck on the ocean. The editing was extremely effective.
I find it odd [...]

“Niagara” fails

Marilyn Monroe is perhaps the only reason to watch this film. And apart from the exquisitely photographed sequence during Monroe’s character’s murder, “Niagara” is artlessly executed.
Half way through the film, I decided to switch on the Spanish subtitles to at least get some more vocabulary input. I didn’t learn much.
